Athletes need to eat a lot of carbohydrates.  Carbohydrates are the foundation to a high performance diet.  Some of the carbohydrates that youth athletes should consume are: cereals, breads, fruits, and vegetables.  Research has shown that when athletes are low in carbohydrates they become fatigued quicker, lose their focus and make mental errors.  When discussing the athletes dietary needs, remind them that carbohydrates is the “preferred fuel” for the body to allow them to sprint up and down the field or court.
