  • Sunscreen & Athletes

Many sports involve spending hours outside and exposed to sun. It is important to take measures to protect your athletes from sunburn. Damage from sunburns last a life time and have a cumulative effect on your body. According to Cleveland Clinic dermatologists, about half of the sun exposure we get in a lifetime is before the age of 18.  To decrease the risk of skin cancer, teach your athletes to:

    • Apply sunscreen at least 20-30 minutes before going outdoors
    • Put on a golf ball-sized amount of sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30
    • Cover all exposed areas, including ears, lips, face and back of hands
    • Reapply sunscreen when coming out of the water and every 90 minutes without fail
    • Wear sunglasses and protective clothing
    • Try to avoid direct rays of the sun around the noon hours. Peak hours for UV rays are 10am – 3pm
    • Seek shade
