The city of Cleveland has a proud history over 200 years in the making. Cleveland obtained its name on July 22, 1796 when surveyors of the Connecticut Land Company laid out the Connecticut Western Reserve into townships. It was named after General Moses Cleaveland, an investor in the company who led the survey of its land within the Western Reserve. General Cleaveland oversaw the plan for the modern downtown area centered on Public Square. The first settler in Cleaveland was Lorenzo Carter, who built a cabin on the banks of the Cuyahoga River. The spelling of the city’s name was later changed to “Cleveland” in 1831 when the “a” was dropped so the name could fit the masthead of The Cleveland Advertiser, an early city newspaper. Originally a frontier village, Cleveland grew into a manufacturing and business center for Northern Ohio. Today, the city is headquarters for manufacturing, medical, biotech/biomed, and banking industries. It has also become a growing sports, tourism and convention destination.
