Life Without Basketball, the story of basketball player Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir, is a must-see inspirational documentary that will be screened at the 43rd annual Cleveland International Film Fest (CIFF) March 31 and April 1 at Tower City Cinemas.
The film chronicles Bilqis’ meteoric rise as a superstar young athlete, her professional roadblock as the International Basketball Federation (FIBA)’s rule against headwear prohibited her from wearing hijab, and her bold response of petitioning FIBA to change the rule while starting an awareness campaign about discrimination in sports. While she awaits a ruling from FIBA, she’s coaching Muslim girls to follow their dreams.
Greater Cleveland Sports Commission is a proud community partner of CIFF for Life Without Basketball. The film is presented as part of the Velocity program series and highlights diversity and inclusion issues in the lives of athletes. Cleveland will host the NCAA Women’s Final Four in 2024.
