GCSC ANNOUNCES AWARD FINALISTS FOR 19TH GREATER CLEVELAND SPORTS AWARDS

CLEVELAND Greater Cleveland Sports Commission has selected its finalists for the 19th Greater Cleveland Sports Awards presented by Medical Mutual and Huntington Bank. Finalists were selected by local sports and media outlets as well as an awards committee who chose outstanding athletes from Northeast Ohio’s following counties: Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, Stark and Summit. The finalists in the following categories were based on highest number of votes: male and female high school athlete of the year, male and female collegiate athlete of the year and professional athlete of the year.

Winners from each category will be announced live at the 19th Greater Cleveland Sports Award which will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2019 at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel in Downtown Cleveland. Doors open at 5:00 p.m.

Male High School Athlete of the Year presented by University Hospitals Sports Medicine

Female High School Athlete of the Year presented by University Hospitals Sports Medicine

  • Ava Rauser, Volleyball, Rocky River High School, Rocky River

Male Collegiate Athlete of the Year

  • University of Akron Men’s Soccer Team, Soccer, University of Akron, Akron

Female Collegiate Athlete of the Year

  • Anna Brandt, Cross Country, Cleveland State University, Rocky River
  • Erin Gardner, Volleyball, Kent State University, Avon

Professional Athlete of the Year presented by FOX Sports Ohio

  • Corey Kluber, MLB, pitcher, Cleveland Indians
  • Baker Mayfield, NFL, quarterback, Cleveland Browns
  • Jose Ramirez, MLB, third-base, Cleveland Indians
  • Denzel Ward, NFL, corner-back, Cleveland Browns

Greater Cleveland Sports Awards is the premier annual fundraiser that supports Greater Cleveland Sports Commission and celebrates a year of athletic achievements in Northeast Ohio. This event features appearances from current and former national sports celebrities along with a formal dinner, and awards ceremony honoring the top high school, collegiate and professional sports accomplishments in 2018.
