GCSC ANNOUNCES AWARD WINNERS FOR 22ND GREATER CLEVELAND SPORTS AWARDS

CLEVELAND 22nd Greater Cleveland Sports Awards presented by Medical Mutual and Ancora honored the best of 2021 Cleveland sports on Wednesday, March 23, 2022 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse (RMFH). Maria Taylor, NBC Sports host and correspondent, led the live show full of appearances from local and national sports celebrities in front of over 1,300 guests.

Highlights from tonight’s show include Myles Garrett, Cleveland Browns Defensive End, receiving Professional Athlete of the Year Award presented by Bally Sports Ohio from Kolby Altman, Cleveland Cavaliers President of Basketball Operations. Honors were accepted by Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Browns rookie linebacker.

Kenny Lofton, Cleveland baseball legend, joined Jensen Lewis, former Cleveland relief pitcher and current Bally Sports Ohio host, to present CC Sabathia with this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Union Home Mortgage. Watch Sabathia’s Lifetime Achievement video here.

Katie Nageotte, USA Olympic Gold Medalist, and Delante “Tiger” Johnson, USA Olympic Boxer, awarded the High School Athlete of the Year Awards presented by University Hospitals Sports Medicine to Kathryn Randorf and Drew Allar.

Cleveland State University’s Al Eichelberger, Men’s Basketball Forward, and Chris Kielsmeier, Head Women’s Basketball Coach, teamed up to present the Collegiate Athlete of the Year Awards presented by H. Jack’s Plumbing & Heating Co. “The Super Plumber!” to Adelaide Aquilla and Alex Phillip.

Additionally, Taylor conducted a heartfelt interview on stage with Robbie Boyce, Cleveland Clinic Sports Medicine Courage Award recipient. Watch his full story here.

The culmination of the night was highlighted by two Cleveland sports broadcast staples Jim Donovan, WKYC news anchor, and John Telich, former FOX 8 sports anchor, to present the 2021 Best Moment in Cleveland Sports presented by JACK Entertainment. Browns rookie cornerback Greg Newsome II accepted the award on behalf of the Cleveland Browns for the 2021 NFL Draft.

  • Alex Phillip, John Carroll University, Cross Country (St. Vincent - St. Mary High School)

Female Collegiate Athlete of the Year presented by H. Jack's Plumbing & Heating Co. "The Super Plumber!"

  • Adelaide Aquilla, The Ohio State University, Track & Field (Magnificat High School)

Professional Athlete of the Year presented by Bally Sports Ohio

  • Myles Garrett, Cleveland Browns, Defensive End

Sports Awards is the premier annual sports fundraiser that supports Greater Cleveland Sports Commission and celebrates a year of athletic achievements in Northeast Ohio from high school stars to professional athletes.
