MAYA AUSTERMAN TO RECEIVE CLEVELAND CLINIC SPORTS MEDICINE COURAGE AWARD AT SPORTS AWARDS

Avon Lake High School basketball student-athlete to receive honors#CLESportsAwards CLEVELAND – Maya Austerman, a junior from Avon Lake, Ohio, overcame major medical obstacles to continue playing competitive sports. Austerman will be honored with the Cleveland Clinic Sports Medicine Courage Award during the 23rd Greater Cleveland Sports Awards presented by Medical Mutual and Ancora on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2023 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. In 2019, Austerman was playing in a summer basketball league when she began to experience chest and throat tightness, shortness of breath and wheezing during periods of intense play, leading to an increase in anxiety while exercising.
